Credit Level
-
To obtain one credit hour, a student must attend eight performances during a given semester. This is essentially one event every other week. However, note that during the fall semester, there are not as many options during the initial weeks of the semester. Therefore, it is conceivable that during the fall semester, the student may find more events available later, rather than earlier, in the semester. As a result, it is conceivable that a fall semester student may want to consider one of the art gallery displays or the Campus Art at UNI venue in order to have one event covered early in the semester. Instructors will provide students with a booklet entitled Art on Campus and help you plan this component. One event must come from the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, one from the Strayer-Wood Theatre, one each from the School of Music instrumental and choral sections, one from the gallery arts and one from the dance section. The other two performances may be selected from the categories listed above. The student will submit a proposal that, while not binding, should be followed if at all possible. The proposal will be discussed with the instructor and agreed to before the actual initiation of events. Changes in the proposal must have instructor approval prior to any alteration.
Within one academic week of the performance, a reflection/reaction paper, along with appropriate program and ticket must be turned in for evaluation. Papers must be typed, double-spaced, no mistakes and no longer than two pages in length. An exhibit page will be given to the student to follow during the first class period.
-
Note that class fees are minimal as events at the Strayer-Wood Theatre, the School of Music and most other venues require either no payment or they are covered by your uCard, or the recompense is minor. Artists Series events attended at the GBPAC are 50% off adult prices and some shows have a $5 rush ticket for students. Your instructor will have a complete price listing for GBPAC events at the first class meeting.
Timeline:
First class period:
Hand out syllabus, define the course, explore written options and explain the requirements of the course. At this time students will be expected to draft a preliminary schedule of events they plan to attend during the semester. All schedules are subject to chance with instructor permission. Note: Students are expected to turn in reflections/reaction personally to the professor in order to have a brief conversation.
Midterm:
Accountability meeting, make certain students are on track and have completed the appropriate number of events up to that date.
Final:
Discussion period with all of the participants, which will more than likely be somewhat broad and generalized to accommodate the wide array of performances and events attended. This will also be a time when this course will be examined to alterations within its requirements.
Current Projects
With the Student Interaction Committee entering its fifth year, we will be focusing our activities and looking for new ways of expanding student involvement in the arts. Some of the projects for the coming year include supporting the Panther Prowl, an event encouraging student attendance at various events across campus. We are also striving to work with the Department of Residence to reach a wider variety of students. Another project we are working on is developing a web link off of the GBPAC website. This link will include information regarding the SIC Constitution, group pictures, current projects as well as contact information. This will also help us expand our reach beyond those sitting in the audience.
