Merce Cunningham Dance Company

Tuesday, March 20, 7:30 p.m.

Merce Cunnigham

"Possibilities in dance are bound only by our imagination and our two legs." -- Merce Cunningham

America’s most influential living choreographer, Merce Cunningham uses brilliant imagery and unexpected combinations to create an unending array of possibilities. Merce Cunningham Dance Company last appeared in Iowa 30 years ago.

They will be performing Split Sides, Dice Rolling and a new piece by Cunningham, which will premiere in New York in October. Split Sides, which Cunningham choreographed in 2003, is a dance in which the choreography and individual collaborative elements are each being developed in two distinct parts. At each performance the order in which any particular element is used will change depending on a roll of the dice, providing 32 different possible versions – continuing Cunningham’s long history of involving “chance operations” in the presentation of his work.

This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts American Materpieces program with additional contributions from General Mills Foundation, Land O’Lakes Foundation, and the Iowa Arts Council.

Funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Additional funding provided by The Ford Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Artists of Black Mountain College: An Exhibition of Works from the UNI Permanent Art Collection

Lobby Showcases of the UNI Gallery of Art

Kamerick Art Building

March 19 – April 15, 2007

In the spring of 2007, the UNI Gallery of Art will present the mini-exhibition "Artists of Black Mountain College: An Exhibition of Works from the UNI Permanent Art Collection", mounted in conjunction with Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center’s presentation of programming by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Featured works of art include “Post Rally,” a silkscreen and lithograph print from 1965 by Robert Rauschenberg and “Homage to the Square: Blue Call,” an oil on aluminum painting from 1955-8 by Josef Albers. In addition to Rauschenberg and Albers, other artists included in the exhibition are Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Shoji Hamada, and Ben Shahn.

Situated in the mountains of North Carolina, Black Mountain College in the early to mid-20^th century was a thriving, dynamic center of progressive education and an institution where collaboration, experimentation, and avant-garde practices flourished. A great many artists, performers, and educators who we now understand to be major luminaries in the worlds of arts, culture, and letters either took new root – particularly those from war-torn Europe – or began careers and established movements there. Merce Cunningham was a principal figure in this environment, often working with other artists like John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg to produce happenings, performances, and other works of art. The UNI Gallery of Art presents this exhibition in order to honor the dancer, his company, artists he worked with in the hills of North Carolina, and most especially the spirit of collaboration.
