Teaching Artist Development
The Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa and the Iowa Arts Council will host a one-day workshop, “Laying a Foundation: Defining Arts Integration," developed by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

The Artists as Educators seminar, “Laying a Foundation: Defining Arts Integration,” is a one-day professional learning experience helpful to organizations interested in establishing a shared understanding among the teaching artists about the definition and practice of arts integration. The seminar includes presentations, reflection and discussion to help participants examine a comprehensive definition of arts integration. Each participant receives a comprehensive binder of resource materials, which documents and extends the seminar content.
As a result of participating in this seminar, participants:
Will know:
- A comprehensive definition for arts integration
- The meaning of key terms within that definition
- That the practice of arts integration is supported by current theories that are influencing and shaping education
- About relevant resources
Will be able to:
- Identify the key features of arts integration in a model lesson
- Reflect on their beliefs about and practice of arts integration
Will appreciate:
- The changing view of the purpose of education and how arts integration is aligned with that view
The seminar serves up to 40 teaching artists and is presented by a leader who is a highly qualified, outstanding Kennedy Center presenter. Applications must be received by July 15, 2009 -submit your application and payment earlier, as limited seats are available. Download an application (pdf).
Seminar registration fee is $35. If affiliated with one of partnering organizations listed below, it is $25. Payment is due at the time of registration. Breakfast and lunch are provided each day.
