Learning Mathematics and Science Through the Arts (LMSTA) addressed Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership’s goal of preparing more high-quality mathematics and science teachers for Iowa’s schools.
Overview
Learning Math and Science Through the Arts has been an enhancement of an existing project of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, Waterloo Community School District, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The project includes week-long residencies that occur throughout the 2008-2009 & 2009-2010 academic year, and targets teachers within the Waterloo Community School District and UNI education majors.
Teaching artists trained by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington D.C., lead project activities, such as three-hour participatory professional development workshops and classroom demonstrations for in-service and pre-service teachers.

Learning Mathematics and Science Through the Arts
The Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP) is a state funded initiative led by the University of Northern Iowa, in partnership with Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. IMSEP’s goals are to improve mathematics and science performance of Iowa students; to prepare more high quality mathematics and science teachers for Iowa’s schools; and to promote statewide collaboration and cooperation.
