This acclaimed South Indian dance troupe was founded by artistic director Viji Prakash as a way to introduce young South Asian American youth to the ancient art of Bharata Natyam dance. A virtuoso in this ancient classical dance form, Prakash is an internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer and teacher. Her dynamic stage presence and her rhythmic command over the complex foot patterns and striking facial expressions bring to life the beauty and grandeur of this art form.
Fifteen dancers and musicians from India, Malaysia, and United States will power their way through Dance Yatra, a vibrant journey rooted in the finest traditions of Indian music and dance handed down through generations. High voltage performances of intense physically and superbly coordinated footwork from South India's Bharata Natyam dance tradition, to the deeply luminous technique of Odissi that was performed by temple dancers in Eastern India. This high spirited work is accompanied by master musicians from India.
