"Possibilities in dance are bound only by our imagination and our two legs." -- Merce Cunningham

America’s most influential living choreographer, Merce Cunningham uses brilliant imagery and unexpected combinations to create an unending array of possibilities. Merce Cunningham Dance Company last appeared in Iowa 30 years ago.

They will be performing Split Sides, Dice Rolling and a new piece by Cunningham, which will premiere in New York in October. Split Sides, which Cunningham choreographed in 2003, is a dance in which the choreography and individual collaborative elements are each being developed in two distinct parts. At each performance the order in which any particular element is used will change depending on a roll of the dice, providing 32 different possible versions – continuing Cunningham’s long history of involving “chance operations” in the presentation of his work.

This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts American Materpieces program with additional contributions from General Mills Foundation, Land O’Lakes Foundation, and the Iowa Arts Council.

Funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Additional funding provided by The Ford Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Tuesday, March 20, 7:30 p.m.
